Tisha B'Av Schedule
This year, the Ninth of Av falls on Shabbos. The Fast will therefore be observed on the Tenth of Av, Sunday, July 22nd. The following information applies to this year's observance of Tisha B'Av: SHABBOS DAY SHALOSH SEUDOS One should eat Shalosh Seudos at home prior to the fast and be done eating before 8:45pm. There is no obligation to eat eggs or food dipped in ashes as one would normally do for a Seudah Hamafsekes (final meal) before the fast. SERVICE TIMES The Fast begins at 8:45pm Shabbos ends: 9:28 pm Maariv by candlelight at 9:45 pm followed by the reading of Eicha (Lamentations and Songs of Sadness and Hope)
SYMBOLS OF MOURNING We remove our leather shoes at Maariv. One should not bring one's Tisha B'Av shoes on Shabbos, as that constitutes preparing for a weekday. Rather, bring non-leather shoes to shul on Friday, before Shabbos begins. One should not sit on low stools until after Shabbos.
HAVDALAH AFTER SHABBOS If one has not (yet) recited Maariv, say the words "Baruch Hamavdil bayn Kodesh L'chol" ("Blessed is He who distinguishes between the Holy and the Profane") before doing any weekday activity. No bracha is said over the wine or the spices. WOMEN'S CLASS AFTER EICHA Saturday night after Eicha for a class by camp counselor Sarah Rochel Shifrin
SUNDAY MORNING No Tallis or Tefillin worn in the morning. 9:00 am Shacharis 9:45 am Kinnos - Elegies for Jewish Tragedies 10:45 am Presentation by Rabbi Binyomin Friedman
SUNDAY MIDDAY
VIDEO PRESENTATIONS -FROM 5:15 PM 6:15 PM Feeling the Pain of Another: Program B with Charley Harary and others 7:15 PM V'Nikdashti - Faith during the Holocaust as told by Survivors Suggested donation: $10/students $5
MINCHA FAST ENDS 9:20 pm AFTER THE FAST Unlike most years, when one would delay resuming normal activities such as doing laundry, until the following day, one may resume normal activities after the fast on Sunday evening.
May this Tisha B'Av be transformed from a day of Mourning and Sorrow into a day of Joy and Celebration as we anticipate the arrival of Mashiach and the rebuilding of the Third Beis HaMikdash speedily and in our days. |
